Emergency Comfort Packs
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
In the event of a major disaster (such as an earthquake), our school needs to be prepared to accommodate your child and provide for his/her needs for at least 24 hours. Following a disaster, you may not be able to pick your child up from school (or the district may not be able to transport your child home) due to impassable roadways, etc. If your child is stranded at school, you will feel better knowing that he/she is as comfortable as possible. In order to accomplish this, we need your help. We strongly urge you to put together a comfort pack for your child/children that can be stored in a container here at school and issued to you child in the event of an emergency. These individual comfort packs, in addition to the water and first aid supplies that the district provides, could be a lifesaver in the event of a major disaster. While preparing this pack may seem an inconvenience now, please be assured that the advantage of being prepared will far outweigh any inconvenience, and will also provide peace of mind for you and your child. At the bottom of this page is a suggested list of items that need to be put into the attached one-gallon Ziploc bag. Be sure to put your child’s name on the index card provided in BOLD PRINT, and place the card (name facing outward) inside the bag. Return the bag and contents to your child’s teacher as quickly as possible. Your prompt attention to this matter is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions regarding our school’s disaster policies, please contact the school at 822-2190. You can also email the PTO at [email protected].
Suggested items:
2 prepackaged snack foods (i.e., cheese and crackers, granola bars)
3 boxed drinks (not soda)
1 change of underwear
3 packages of instant cocoa or cider
1 game, book, small toy, or something to help pass the time
A letter from a parent with a family photo, and a phone number of an out-of-state friend or relative. The letter should explain to your child that he/she is being taken care of and that you will be reunited as soon as possible.
*Optional: You may include a pair of socks, a toothbrush and toothpaste, hard candies, or whatever else you can fit in the bag.
The comfort packs will be returned to you at the end of the school year. If you move, please remind your child’s teacher.
